Music is not the same as it used to be, it hasn’t been for a while. Pop music and Latin music took over the world, even if it’s not quality music, but why are people so addicted to this kind of music? Well, it’s simple, the music they’re listening to doesn’t need much thinking, or much comprehending, it’s addictive to them because of how simple it is. Rock is not that. Rock is complex, it has a lot of elements to it, more instruments, more notes, more chords, and people nowadays, don’t want that, they don’t want a 10-minute-long song, they don’t want guitar solos, or any solos of the sort. People want EASY.
For the longest time they’ve been trying to kill rock, I feel like we’ve all heard, “Rock is dead”. Its infuriating. There are tons of articles and posts about that since rock stopped being the popular genre. But the truth is, Rock will never die. Rock is not a genre of music anymore, is culture, and it is classic. Everyone is a Rock fan, even if they say they’re not, everyone knows a Rock song, they’ve jammed to that song, have memories to the song, and most people have a band t-shirt in their closet. But it seems like when it comes to admitting it, people hate Rock, because it’s too loud or scary or whatever lame excuse. Why did Rock stopped being cool? Were we gaslighted into believing Rock is bad?
Even though I wasn’t as fortunate to live in THE era of Rock, and that my journey with Rock came in a funny way, I know rock. And before I did, I was that person with a lame excuse about why I would never like it. And from my experience it was because of this idea people have about it and the people who listens to it. So, I do think this idea people have makes an impact, but the second I stopped caring and once I started to pay attention, and listening for me, I loved it, and that truly changed my life.
We’ve seen and we know that Rock is far from dead, and it seems people don’t want to accept that, they think because most of the original and iconic bands are old, that means no one listens to it anymore or that fans no longer exist. So why does the charts and media ignore us?
I believe media outlets think Rock is not relevant enough anymore because they don’t see us on the charts, and that just confirms that for them, but the thing is, many metalheads have the CD’s and Vinyl’s of their favorite albums, and favorite bands, and they probably bought it when it came out, or they inherited from a family member that probably bought it when it came out, and they do listen to them now a days, especially now that vinyl’s have come back in popularity. But how can the charts pick up on that? They don’t. The listeners of the artists we see on the charts, are younger, they only have Spotify and apple music, and that’s the why they are on the charts, because they care a ton about the numbers and about the media, and that, they can track.
Even if Rock isn’t on the charts anymore, and that having to do with streaming and algorithms, and many more complicated shit. Rock fans know quality, and they want quality, we CRAVE quality. And rockstars, they’re not searching fame or streams, they want to build a community, they want to release and make music they truly love and that is authentic to them, not only to sell, but to share.
We’ll stand strong together, because Rock is still cool, and to hell with the media and what they think we are. We are more than streams or a number in a chart, I feel as if we are a family and that’s by far the most important thing about art and music, and the most special part about Rock.
Keep rocking
